A method of preparing borosulfate materials avoids the need for fuming sulfuric acid, also known as oleum. Instead, B(OH)present in solution in concentrated sulfuric acid at 5% to 15% by weight is reacted with a cation source at 100-250° C. under dynamic vacuum while in connection with a receiving vessel comprising a desiccant and separate from the reaction vessel, thereby causing formation of a borosulfate material in the reaction vessel while eliminated water is collected in the receiving vessel.

Scalable method for preparing crystalline borosulfate materials

Deposition of Pt nanoparticles on UiO metal organic frameworks via solvothermal reduction is achieved by reducing Pt acetylacetonate (Pt(acac)) in a UiO-66 and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) mixture at, for example, 130° C. for 18 hrs. Modification of reaction temperature and time can control the size of the Pt nanoparticles.

Tunable thermochromic materials comprise a metal salt with a varying proportion of two different anions and an organic ligand. Partial substitution via doping during the initial synthesis with a macro-structurally similar (generating an isostructural material) yet chemically different anion creates a material with altered thermochromic properties. For example, in bromide-doped bis(N,N'-diethylethylenediamine)nickel(II)) tetrafluoroborate; both the tetrafluoroborate (BF4-) and bromide (Br—) derivatives are isostructural. Substitution of BF4- for Br— causes a decrease in the materials' thermochromic transition temperature by approximately 10° C.
