An apparatus for measuring normal and shear stress at a surface. The apparatus includes a substrate; and a plurality of sensing units on the substrate. Each sensing unit includes a mechanical transducer having a receiving surface and a sensing surface; and a plurality of normal force sensors between the sensing surface and the substrate.

Apparatus for measuring surface profile of normal and shear stress

A photoalignment method includes photoaligning a first liquid crystal cell and using the photoaligned first liquid crystal cell as a mask in the photoalignment of a second liquid crystal cell. The method may increase spatial dynamic range or decrease pitch.

Recursive photoalignment method

A liquid crystal device includes a light source, a first transparent substrate, a first transparent electrode, a switchable or tunable micropatterned alignment layer arranged in an array of pixels, a liquid crystal layer, a fixed alignment layer, a second transparent electrode, and a second transparent substrate. The switchable micropatterned alignment layer is disposed between the liquid crystal layer and one of the first transparent substrate and the second transparent substrate. The fixed alignment layer is disposed between the liquid crystal layer and one of the first transparent substrate and the second transparent substrate. Light from the light source is not visible outside the liquid crystal device when the switchable or tunable micropatterned alignment layer is in an off-state.

Transparent liquid crystal device

A method of tilting liquid crystal molecules is presented. The method entails providing a substrate including a photoalignment layer on top of a layer of liquid crystal molecules. The photoalignment layer is exposed to patterned light that is incident on the substrate at a substantially normal angle. The patterned light is polarized in a polarization direction that is non-parallel to an incident surface of the substrate.
