The invention is a composition comprising a) one or more organotitanates having four ligands wherein the ligands are hydrocarbyl, optionally containing one or more functional groups having one or more heteroatoms selected from the group comprising oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur wherein two or more of the ligands may form a cyclic structure; b) one or more mercaptosilanes; c) one or more polyaminosilanes; d) one or more secondary aminosilanes; and e) a solvent which dissolves the components of the composition. The composition also includes an organotin compound f). This composition is referred to as a clear primer hereinafter. In another embodiment the invention is a system for bonding glass to a substrate which comprises a clear primer according to the invention; and an adhesive comprising an isocyanate functional prepolymer and a catalyst for the cure of the isocyanate functional prepolymer.

This composition is referred to as a clear primer hereinafter. Preferably, the composition comprises both an organotitanate or zirconate and a strong acid.

In one aspect, this invention is a polyurethane sealant composition comprising (1) a urethane prepolymer having an isocyanate functionality of at least about 2.0 and a weight average molecular weight of at least about 2,000; and (2) a catalytic amount of (a) a substantially active hydrogen free glycol acid salt of a tertiary amine and an organo metallic compound, (b) a mixture of a substantially active hydrogen free glycol acid salt of a tertiary amine and an organo metallic compound and a second organometallic compound, or (c) a mixture of an organometallic compound with dimorpholinodialkyl ether or an dialkylmorpholinodialkyl ether. In another embodiment, the polyurethane sealant composition further comprises (A) a silane, or (B) an adduct of an isocyanate reactive silane and a polyisocyanate, (C) the reaction product of an isocyanate reactive silane or an adduct of an isocyanate reactive silane and a polyisocyanate with a polyisocyanate and an active hydrogen containing compound or a polyurethane prepolymer which has free isocyanate moieties; which reaction product has an average of at least one silane group and at least one isocyanate group per molecule. In another embodiment the invention is a method for bonding glass to a substrate which comprises contacting a sealant according to the invention with glass and another substrate with the sealant disposed between the glass and substrate and thereafter allowing the sealant to cure so as to bind the glass to the substrate. The sealant composition of the invention is useful in bonding glass substrates to metal plastic, fiberglass or composite substrates, which may or may not be painted. It has been discovered to give unexpectedly high lap shear strength when no primer compositions have previously been applied to the painted plastic, metal, fiberglass or composite substrate.

Polyurethane sealant compositions

Described herein is a primer composition which comprises a solution or dispersion of: (a) about 2 percent to about 30 percent by weight of a film-forming resin; (b) about 2 percent to about 80 percent by weight of a reaction product of an epoxy silane and an amino silane, wherein the amino silane contains at least two amine groups per molecule, which is prepared by (1) contacting an amino silane and epoxy silane in amounts such that the molar ratio of epoxy silane to amino silane in the reaction mixture is less than about 1.8:1.0 and then (2) adding additional epoxy silane to the reaction mixture so that the molar ratio of epoxy silane to amino silane is at least about 2:1 in a volatile solvent. Described herein is also a method of bonding a vehicle window to a vehicle window flange using the primer composition and a urethane adhesive. It has been discovered that the primer of the invention enhances the bonding of a non-porous substrate, such as glass, to a second substrate, particularly when used in conjunction with a 'fast cure' adhesive comprised of an isocyanate-functional prepolymer and dimorpholinodiethyl ether. In addition, such primers are more easily prepared than primers which require the use of a silane 'cook' comprising a reaction product of a polyisocyanate and one or more silane-containing compounds.

Method of bonding a urethane adhesive to non-porous substrates

Described herein is a primer composition which comprises a solution or dispersion of: (a) about 2 percent to about 30 percent by weight of a film-forming resin; (b) about 2 percent to about 80 percent by weight of a reaction product of an epoxy silane and an amino silane, wherein the amino silane contains at least two amine groups per molecule, which is prepared by (1) contacting an amino silane and epoxy silane in amounts such that the molar ratio of epoxy silane to amino silane in the reaction mixture is less than about 1.8:1.0 and then (2) adding additional epoxy silane to the reaction mixture so that the molar ratio of epoxy silane to amino silane is at least about 2:1 in a volatile solvent. It has been discovered that the primer of the invention enhances the bonding of a non-porous substrate, such as glass, to a second substrate, particularly when used in conjunction with a 'fast cure' adhesive comprised of an isocyanate-functional prepolymer and dimorpholinodiethyl ether. In addition, such primers are more easily prepared than primers which require the use of a silane 'cook' comprising a reaction product of a polyisocyanate and one or more silane-containing compounds.

In one aspect, this invention is a primer comprising a solution of: (a) a polyester resin of a carboxylic acid and a glycol; (b) a polymethylene poly(phenyl isocyanate), diphenylmethane diisocyanate, or mixture thereof; and (c) a silane-containing moiety; in a solvent mixture comprising: (i) a high boiling polar solvent; (ii) an oxygenated solvent; and (iii) an aromatic solvent; wherein the weight ratio of (a):(b) is in the range of from about 0.25:1.0 to 2.0:1.0. In a second aspect, this invention is a primer comprising a solution of: (a) 5-50% of a polyester resin of a carboxylic acid and a glycol; (b) 5-50% of a polymethylene poly(phenyl isocyanate), diphenylmethane diisocyanate, or mixture thereof; (c) 0.1-50% of a silane-containing moiety; (d) 0.1-50% of a high boiling polar solvent; (e) 10-70% of an oxygenated solvent; and (f) 1-50% of an aromatic solvent. It has been discovered that the primer of the invention advantageously provides improved adhesion characteristics of metal-to-glass bonding when used to prime acid resistant paint-coated metal substrates before applying a urethane adhesive, particularly when used with a 'fast cure' adhesive comprising an isocyanate-functional prepolymer and dimorpholinediethyl ether.

It has been discovered that the primer of the invention advantageously provides improved adhesion characteristics of metal-to-glass bonding when used to prime paint-coated metal substrates before the application of a urethane adhesive, particularly when used with a 'fast cure' adhesive comprised of an isocyanate-functional prepolymer and dimorpholinediethyl ether.
