Methods and systems for reducing the temperature of the charge air provided to a turbocharged internal combustion engine. A supercharger is installed on the air intake path, upstream the turbocharger's compressor. A secondary charge air cooler is installed between the supercharger and the main compressor. This over-compresses the intake air, so that an expansion turbine installed downstream the turbocharger's compressor can cool the charge air and still provide sufficient charge air pressure into the intake manifold.

A method of improving cold starting of an internal combustion engine of a vehicle. The vehicle is equipped with an on-board microwave generation system that generates and delivers microwaves into the combustion chamber of each cylinder via an antenna associated with each cylinder. The microwaves are delivered immediately prior to cold start of the engine, causing the combustion chamber and interior elements of the chamber to be warmed.

A method of operating a hydrogen-fueled internal combustion engine. The engine is determined to have a mode control value, which represents a threshold torque. During operation of the engine, a demanded torque of the internal combustion engine is determined and compared to the threshold torque. If the demanded torque is less than the threshold torque, the engine is operated in a low load mode that uses spark ignition and pre-mixed combustion. If the demanded torque is greater than the threshold torque, the engine is operated in a high load mode that uses compression ignition and diffusion combustion.

A method of providing electrical power to on-board electrical devices of a vehicle. The engine has an EGR (exhaust gas recirculation loop) which may be a high pressure loop, a low pressure loop, or a dedicated cylinder loop. A catalyzed heat exchanger on the EGR loop has a steam reformation catalyst and a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger uses hot exhaust gas from the main exhaust line to heat the catalyst. A methane fuel source adds methane to the recirculated exhaust stream before it enters the catalyst, and the catalytic reaction increases the amount of hydrogen in the recirculated exhaust. The hydrogen is then delivered to a PEM fuel cell.

The present invention is directed at a waveguide antenna for microwave enhanced combustion of a previously ignited fuel-air mixture. The waveguide antenna has a thermal conductivity of at least 150 W/m&#x2212;k and can be formed from a metallic shell with a ceramic core.
