The subject invention provides low fiber, yellow-seeded canola, and related canola meal and animal feed. Oil produced from this seed has at least 68% oleic acid and no more than 3% linolenic acid, relative to the total fatty acids in the oil. Specific canola lines exhibiting these characteristics are also provided. Canola seed offering the combined advantages of excellent oil together with high-quality meal has not heretofore been provided.

Low fiber yellow canola seeds comprising high, oleic, low linolenic oil

The present invention provides oil seeds obtained fromthat have a high level of oleic acid (from about 72 to about 84% by weight), a low level of erucic acid (from 0.0 to about 0.2% by weight), low levels of p-hydroxybenzyl glucosinolate and benzyl glucosinolate (each less than or equal to about 0.1 mole per g seed), or a combination thereof. Also provided are plants that produce such oil seeds. Also disclosed are oil seeds having high levels of erucic acid (greater than about 55% by weight) and low levels of p-hydroxybenzyl glucosinolate and benzyl glucosinolate (each less than about 0.1 mole per g seed), and plants that produce such oil seed.

In one aspect, the invention provides new variants of the Fad3 enzyme, including amino acid substitutions, as well as nucleic acid sequences encoding such peptides. Other aspects of the invention include transgenic plants and plant parts. Vectors capable of transforming plant cells are provided, including the nucleic acids of the invention, including Fad3 coding sequences. Corresponding methods are provided for obtaining the transgenic plants of the invention. Methods are provided for using the plants of the invention, including selected plants and transgenic plants, to obtain plant products. Amplification primers for identifying the Fad3 alleles of the invention are provided, together with methods of obtaining plants using the Fad3 alleles of the invention as markers.
