The invention relates to the use of an anabolic amino acid derivative stimulus acting in combination with vitamin D for the manufacture of a medicament or nutritional composition for the prevention and/or treatment of a loss of any one of muscle mass, muscle strength, muscle function, and physical function, or any combination thereof, in a mammal.

Nutritional composition for the stimulation of muscle protein synthesis

The invention pertains to the use of a composition comprising per serving between 50-300 kcal; between 10 g and 35 g proteinaceous matter; and at least 2.5 microgram vitamin D, for the manufacture of a nutritional product for (a) the treatment or prevention of muscle mass decrease, (b) stimulation of muscle mass increase; or (d) stimulating muscle mass preservation, in obese or overweight adults of at least 40 years of age participating in a weight loss program. The inventors surprisingly found that nutritional supplementation with a low-caloric composition rich in protein, particularly whey protein and leucine, compared to an iso-caloric control supplement without protein, synergistically leads to preservation of muscle mass during a weight loss program involving a hypocaloric diet and a resistance exercise program in overweight/obese older adult.

Muscle preservation in overweight or obese adult during weight loss program

The present invention relates to the use of a low-caloric high-protein nutritional composition for use in the prevention or treatment of a disease or condition in a mammal, which involves muscle decline, as well as to specific low-caloric high-protein nutritional compositions for stimulating muscle protein synthesis in a mammal. In particular, the invention relates to the use of a nutritional composition comprising per 100 kcal: (i) at least about 12 g of proteinaceous matter which comprises at least about 80 weight % of whey protein, relative to the total proteinaceous matter, and which comprises at least about 11 weight % of leucine, relative to the total proteinaceous matter, of which at least about 20 weight % is in a free form, relative to the total leucine, (ii) a source of fat and a source of digestible carbohydrates, for the prevention or treatment of a disease or condition which involves muscle decline in a mammal, especially an elderly mammal, wherein the nutritional composition is administered as 1 to 2 servings daily, each serving comprising between 80 and 200 kcal.

Low-caloric high-protein nutritional composition for the stimulation of muscle protein synthesis

This invention discloses a method and compositions for treatment or prevention of pulmonary hypertension in a mammal. Representative mammals include humans and horses. The invention further relates to supplements especially beneficial in preventing or stopping the progression of pulmonary hypertension. The supplements include ribose and folate. Additional nutrients include omega-3 fatty acids and gamma-linolenic acid.
