The new heteropolysaccharide S-657, prepared by fermentation of a new strain of Xanthomonas campestris, ATCC 53159, has valuable properties as a thickening, suspending and stabilizing agent in aqueous solutions and is especially valuable for use in well treating fluids. Heteropolysaccharide S-657 is composed principally of carbohydrate, about 12% protein and about 7% (calculated as O-acetyl) acyl groups, the carbohydrate portion containing about 19% glucuronic acid, and the neutral sugars rhamnose and glucose in the approximate molar ratio of 2:1.

A novel heteropolysaccharide S-184 is disclosed. The compound is a gum produced under suitable conditions by the novel microorganism Alcaligenes sp. This new heteropolysaccharide is composed primarily of carbohydrate as uronic acid (7% to 16%) and mannose, glucose, and galactose in the molar ratio of 1:3:5. The non-carbohydrate portion contains 12-16% protein and 3-4.5% acyl groups. The compound is used to alter viscosity and rheology of aqueous solutions.

The new heteropolysaccharide S-88, prepared by fermentation of an unnamed Pseudomonas species, ATCC 31554, has valuable properties as a thickening, suspending and stabilizing agent in aqueous systems. It is especially useful in formulating oil well drilling fluids and muds. Its chemical composition is 3.2-7% acyl groups, 11.8-18.7% glucuronic acid; and the neutral sugars mannose, glucose, and rhamnose in the approximate molar ratio 1:2:2.

Heteropolysaccharide S-88

The new heteropolysaccharide S-139, prepared by fermentation of an unnamed Psuedomonas species, ATCC 31644 has valuable properties as a thickening, suspending and stabilizing agent in aqueous systems. Polysaccharide S-139 is principally composed of carbohydrate, protein (about 17%), and acyl groups (about 5% calculated as O-acetyl) as the glycosidically linked ester. The carbohydrate portion contains about 14% uronic acid (based on wt. gum) and the neutral sugars rhamnose, mannose, glucose, and galactose in the approximate molar ratio of 2.5:1:1.5:1 respectively.

Heteropolysaccharide S-139

Deacetylated Polysaccharide S-60, prepared by deacetylating the polysaccharide S-60 produced by fermentation of Pseudomonas elodea, ATCC 31461, has valuable properties in both the clarified and non-clarified form, and is useful as an agar substitute or a shapeable room deodorant. The non-clarified deacetylated gum contains about 17% protein and principally carbohydrate, which comprises glucuronic acid (.about.13% based on wt. gum) and the neutral sugars rhamnose and glucose in the approximate molar ratio 3:2. The clarified, deacetylated gum contains mostly carbohydrate and no more than about 2% protein.

Deacetylated polysaccharide S-60

A novel polysaccharide S-60 is disclosed composed of principally carbohydrate, 10-15% protein, and 3-4.5% acetyl groups as the O-glycosidically linked ester. The carbohydrate portion contains about 11% glucuronic acid (based on wt. gum) and the neutral sugars rhamnose and glucose, the latter having an approximate molar ratio of 3 to 2. This polysaccharide is produced by a new Pseudomonas species, P. elodea, in a suitable fermentation medium.

Polysaccharide S-60 and bacterial fermentation process for its

A novel polysaccharide S-53, having a composition of 18-19% uronic acid, 4.8% pyruvate, and 7% acetyl as the O-glycosidically linked ester; and the remainder neutral sugar, 51% glucose and 49% fucose. This polysaccharide is produced by the strain of Klebsiella pneumoniae, ATCC No. 31488 growing in a suitable fermentation medium.

The new heteropolysaccharide S-130, prepared by fermentation of an unnamed Alcaligenes species, ATCC 31555 has valuable properties as a thickening, suspending and stabilizing agent in aqueous systems. It is especially useful in formulating oil well drilling fluids and muds. Its chemical composition is 2.8-7.5% acyl groups, 11.6-14.9% glucuronic acid; and the neutral sugars mannose, glucose and rhamnose, in the approximate molar ratio 1:2:2.

The new heteropolysaccharide S-84, prepared by fermentation of an unnamed Pseudomonas species, ATCC 31562 has valuable properties as a thickening, suspending and stabilizing agent in aqueous systems. It is especially useful in formulating explosive gels. Its chemical composition is within the following weight ranges of sugars: 8-15% glucuronic acid; 40-50% glucose; 35-45% mannose; 5-15% rhamnose; and 3-9% arabinose; it also contains 1-5% acetyl and 2-7% pyruvate groups.

A process for producing a heteropolysaccharide by a bacterial fermentation procedure in which a species of bacteria or a mutant thereof is incubated in a fermentation medium which contains a carbon source, preferably a hydrolyxed starch, a source of magnesium ions, a source of phosphorous, a source of nitrogen and water with the incubation taking place at a temperature of about 28.degree. to about 35.degree. C.
