A food composition having a softening point of at least about 115.degree. F., and composed of an emulsion and a chemically set gel. The emulsion is prepared from water and a fat; the chemically set gel is prepared from a carbohydrate and water.

The present invention provides a method for medical treatment comprising introducing into a human or animal a medical device selected from the group consisting of stents, catheters, cannulas, plugs and constrictors where the medical device comprises ionically crosslinked polymer. The invention further provides a method for medical treatment of humans and animals comprising introducing into them an ionically crosslinkable polymer and a crosslinking ion followed by crosslinking of the polymer to form a medical device selected from the group consisting of stents, catheters, cannulas, plugs and constrictors.

Medical treatment utilizing ionically crosslinked medical devices

The present invention provides medical devices comprised of ionically crosslinked polymer, especially, stents, catheter or cannula components, plugs, and constrictors. The medical devices of the present invention are prepared by treatment of ionically crosslinkable polymer compositions with crosslinking ion compositions to provide ionically crosslinked materials. An important aspect of the present invention is that these medical devices can be disintegrated in-vivo at a desired time through the exposure of the medical device to a chemical trigger which generally is described as an agent that acts to displace the crosslinking ion in the ionically crosslinked material through binding or simple replacement with a non-crosslinking ion.

Method for in vivo chemically triggered disintegration of medical device

A process for the enzymatic oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes in a continuous reaction series is disclosed utilizing crude cellular methanol oxidase and catalase produced by an acceptable organism such as those selected from the genera of Pichia, Hansenula, Candida and Torulopsis. The process maintains a steady-state aldehyde concentration whereby enzyme activity is promoted. In particular, the process has two reactors operating in series continuously producing a fermenter effluent containing growing, intact yeast cells at a cell concentration of about 0.5 to about 3% by weight of the effluent by continuous culture of the cells on a methanol carbon source, continuously introducing the effluent from the first reactor to the second reactor, adding an alcohol feed at about 0.2-10% w/w and oxygen to the second reactor, maintaining a steady-state aldehyde concentration in the reaction mixture, the concentration of residual alcohol being about 0.1-9% w/w by controlling the rates of introduction of effluent and alcohol feed.

Enzymatic oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes in a continuous reaction

A polyvalent cation crosslinked pectin fiber composition is composed of a calcium sensitive low methoxyl pectin with a degree of esterification (DE) of less than 15% or calcium sensitive amidated pectin having a DE of less than 50% where the pectin is polyvalent cation crosslinkable and has an average molecular weight (MW) having an upper limit of 200,000 and a lower limit of 5000. This pectin is useful in making wound dressings for topical applications.
