A method for server consolidation is provided. The method includes collecting performance data of a plurality of source servers in a desired environment, selecting a group of one or more source servers from the plurality of source servers for consolidation, marking each source server in the with one of multiple usability statuses with one of such statuses indicates the marked source server is to be replaced or reused as necessary in the server consolidation, selecting a target platform for a new server, and performing a first server consolidation analysis of the first group based at least on the collected performance data, the initial usability status of each source server in the first group, and the first selected target platform.

A method of managing product end of life over an end of life horizon includes the step of selecting an objective of either maximizing gross profit or minimizing writeoff costs for a selected plurality of products being discontinued. The products may have parts in common. A subset of all possible combinations of product demand levels is selected. Each combination is associated with a probability. A procurement plan that optimizes the selected objective is generated based on the selected subset of demand levels given a non-zero pre-existing inventory of at least some parts of the selected products.

Method and apparatus for managing product end of life

There is provided a system and method for estimating a parameter that represents data describing a physical system. An exemplary method comprises randomizing data representative of a population of items for which the parameter is known. The method may additionally comprise generating data representative of a pseudo population of items using a known perturbation, the data representative of the pseudo population of items being included with the data representative of the population of items for which the parameter is known to form a revised population and selecting a bootstrap sample of a minimum sample size of the revised population. A sensitivity study is performed on the parameters of the items comprising the bootstrap sample to determine a level of change of a predicted parameter value relative to a parameter value of the sample. At least one of a range, a probability distribution or the minimum sample size is revised based on the parameter for items comprising the bootstrap sample to produce at least one of a revised range, a revised probability distribution or a revised minimum sample size, taking into account an effect of the known perturbation applied to the pseudo population. The steps of selecting, performing and revising are repeated until the sensitivity study indicates that the level of change of the parameter is acceptably small. A value of the parameter is estimated for the population based on a parameter corresponding to the acceptably small level of change.

The method includes accessing performance data of a plurality of source servers, receiving multiple consolidation parameters for a desired target server, receiving selected configurations for a new target server, computing a minimum number of target servers required to consolidate the plurality of source servers based at least on the performance data, the selected configurations for the desired target server, and the multiple consolidation parameters, and deriving a bin-packing solution to the server consolidation based at least on the performance data, the selected configurations for the new target server, and the minimum number for the one or more performance metrics.

The tool receives margin values representing margins acceptable to the entities. The decision support system also includes a bidding behavior predictor that predicts bidding behaviors of bidders in the auction based on the estimated unknown elements of market structure and characteristics of the auction. In addition, the system includes an optimizer that employs an evaluation criterion to generate an evaluation of the auction based on (1) the estimated unknown elements of market structure and (2) the predicted bidding behavior of bidders. A method of providing an automated auction analysis is also described.

Automated decision support system for designing auctions

One embodiment of the present invention provides a method and system that computes the optimal level of the reserve price for an auction, with respect to a multiplicity of possible evaluation criteria that the end user of the system may specify. In one embodiment, structural elements characterizing the auction situation are estimated from bid data available on past auctions. The estimated structural elements are then used in the formulation of the user's expected payoff as a function of the reserve price. This objective function is then optimized to obtain the best level of the reserve price. In one embodiment, this method is implemented by a process executed on a computer system, under the control of software and firmware directing the operation of its processors and components. In one embodiment, a computer readable medium causes a computer system to execute the steps in a process for implementing the method.

A product demand forecasting system includes a profile extractor that generates a demand profile of a new product yet to be introduced based on demand profiles of similar products already introduced. The profile extractor normalizes and averages the demand profiles of the similar products to obtain the demand profile of the new product. The forecasting system also includes a life-cycle demand predictor that generates a total life-cycle demand of the new product based on historical demand data of the similar products. A forecast creator is then coupled to the profile extractor and the demand predictor to generate a life-cycle demand forecast for the new product based on the demand profile and total life-cycle demand of the new product. A method of providing a life-cycle product demand forecast for a new product yet to be introduced is also described.
