A friction material comprises a base and a friction generating layer penetrating into and integral with the base. The base presents a bonding surface. The friction generating layer presents a friction generating surface facing opposite the bonding surface of the base. The friction generating layer comprises fibrillated nanofibers, friction adjusting particles, and elastomeric particles. A curable resin is dispersed throughout the friction generating layer and the base of the friction material.

Friction matertial

A friction material has a first outermost surface and a second outermost surface spaced apart from the first outermost surface. The friction material includes a base which forms at least a portion of the first outermost surface. The base includes fibers present in an amount of from 20 to 80 weight percent, a filler present in an amount of from 20 to 80 weight percent, and a deposit which forms at least a portion of the second outermost surface and includes a friction adjusting agent. The friction material further includes a resin disposed throughout the friction material. The deposit is disposed in the friction material in a gradated pattern. At least a portion of the deposit is exposed to the environment and the second outermost surface has a surface roughness of from 2 to 11 micrometers as determined by non-contact laser measurement according to ISO 25178.

Friction material

A friction material presents a friction generating surface and a bonding surface facing opposite said friction generating surface. The friction material includes structural fibers, friction particles, polyvinyl alcohol fibers, and a resin. A method of forming the friction material is also disclosed. The method comprises the steps of: combining the structural fibers, the friction particles, and the polyvinyl alcohol fibers having an average diameter of less than about 11 &#x3bc;m, an average length of less than about 4 mm, an average denier of less than about 1, to form a substrate material; impregnating the substrate material with the resin; and curing the resin to form the friction material.

A friction material presents a friction generating surface and a bonding surface facing opposite the friction generating surface. The friction material includes an organopolysiloxane resin, a plurality of fibers, and a plurality of friction particles. The organopolysiloxane resin includes siloxy units independently represented by the following formula: (RSiO) and/or (RSiO); wherein each Rand Ris independently selected from a monovalent hydrocarbon group having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms.

A friction material includes a base, a deposit including a friction modifier, and a resin disposed throughout the friction material. The base includes aramid fibers present in an amount of from greater than 50 weight percent to 70 weight percent, based on a total weight of the base. The base also includes a filler present in an amount from 30 weight percent to less than 50 weight percent, based on a total weight of the base. The friction material is also free of a material having a thermal degradation temperature of less than 200&#xb0; C. The friction material may have a porosity of from 60% to 85% as determined using ASTM D4404-10 and a median pore size of from 0.5 &#x3bc;m to 50 &#x3bc;m, as determined using ASTM D4404-10.

A friction material comprises a base and a porous friction generating layer penetrating into and integral with the base. The base presents a bonding surface. The porous friction generating layer presents a friction generating surface facing opposite the bonding surface of the base. The porous friction generating layer comprises fibers and friction adjusting particles, and about 30 to about 95% of a total surface area of the fibers is in contact with the friction adjusting particles. A curable resin is dispersed throughout the porous friction generating layer and the base.

A wet friction material for use in a wet clutch includes a friction interfacing surface for experiencing frictional engagement with an opposed surface in the presence of a lubricant. At least a portion of the friction interfacing surface comprises fibrillated nanofibers, which define a nanofibrous web, and friction adjusting particles held by the nanofibrous web. A cured resin may adhere the fibrillated nanofibers and the friction adjusting particles to provide structural support for the friction material.

Wet friction material

One exemplary embodiment includes a friction material including a base including a plurality of fibers. The base including an engagement surface, and a plurality of binder particles and friction modifying particles at the engagement surface.

Sintered, carbon friction materials are made from fibrous materials that are impregnated with resins prior to sintering. Preferably, non-woven fibrous materials are impregnated with phenolic resin and sintered at 400 to 8000 C. The resulting material has an open porosity above 50 percent by volume.

Carbon friction materials

This friction material has a fibrous base material and preferably is a wet friction material for use in a fluid environment. The fibers have a small diameter and a high tensile modulus resulting in flexible fibers that performs well in a high temperature, high pressure fluid environment. The fibers have a diameter ranging from 1 to 20 micrometers and a tensile modulus greater than 70 Gpa. In the preferred embodiment, the small diameter fibers are small diameter carbon fibers or small diameter mineral fibers.

A friction material includes a fibrous base material having at least one type of petroleum pitch-based carbon fiber.

A friction material has a first layer of a base material and a second layer of at least one type of friction modifying particle having substantially symmetrical geometric shapes on a top surface of the base material. The second layer has an average thickness of about 30 to about 200 microns and the surface area coverage of about 80 to about 100% such that the top layer has a fluid permeability lower than the first layer.
