Poultry carcasses are contacted with water treated with one or more specified dihalodialkylhydantoin biocides in a processing operation downstream from a scalding tank. The aqueous effluent from that downstream operation or from any location further downstream is recycled to the scalding tank. Surprisingly, the bromine residues from the dihalodialkylhydantoin biocides are much more thermally unstable than, for example, the commonly used microbiocide, sodium hypochlorite. Thus, the effluent from the scalding tank has its active bromine content significantly reduced before it is sent to a water purification facility wherein microbial action is used to reduce the BOD of the waste water before its release to the environment. Thus, injury to this desired microbial action is reduced. In addition, the recycle reduces water consumption in the overall poultry processing operation.

Microbiological and environmental control in poultry processing

Methods of processing four-legged slaughter animals for consumption as meat and/or meat product(s) are described. The methods comprise I) contacting exterior surfaces of the live animal at least once with a microbiocidal solution formed from mixing together at least (i) water and (ii) at least one 1,3-dibromo-5,5-dialkylhydantoin, such contacting occurring at least once when the animal is en route to being slaughtered but before it is killed by exsanguination; or II) contacting the carcass of the animal, after exsanguination, with a microbiocidal solution formed from mixing together at least (i) water and (ii) at least one 1,3-dibromo-5,5-dialkylhydantoin or III) contacting at least one raw meat product and/or at least one processed meat product derived from the carcass. The contacting can be done one or more times in each of I), II), and III). Considerable advantages, which are described, are realized when using such methods.

The contacting can be done one or more times in each of I), II), and III). Considerable advantages, which are described, are realized when using such methods.

When certain weight ratios of certain flammable additive components (an ether and an epoxyalkane) are blended in n-propyl bromide, the components can actually function as flame retardants or flame suppressants when the resulting cleaning composition is used in aerosol applications. The proportions of the additives used are small; yet suitably effective stabilization against metallic corrosion is achieved even at mildly elevated temperatures.

A process for cleaning movie film, and especially cellulose acetate based polymer film, without causing film damage, comprises immersing the film into a cleaning solvent composition which comprises one or more halogenated hydrobromocarbons having from 1 to 3 carbons, from 1 to 3 bromine atoms and at least one chlorine or fluorine atom, such as 3-bromo-1,1,1-trifluoropropane, removing the film from the solvent and drying the film.

Stabilized, n-propyl bromide containing cleaning solvent compositions and a cleaning process are provided. The cleaning solvent compositions include an alcohol selected from 1-propanol and 2-butanol, including mixtures thereof, as a co-solvent so as to form azeotropic or azeotropic-like mixtures which have no fire or flash points.

N-propyl bromide based cleaning solvent and ionic residue removal process

A method for producing crystalline synthetic faujasite of the zeolite 'X' type is disclosed. The method comprises (a) separately preparing a sodium silicate solution and a sodium aluminate solution, (b) admixing the sodium silicate solution and the sodium aluminate solution at high shear until a mixture results having a ratio of sodium oxide to silica of 0.4:1 to 2:1, silica to alumina of 2.2:1 to 3.5:1, and water to sodium oxide of 20:1 to 70:1, (c) heating said mixture to a temperature of about 80.degree. to 120.degree. C. in the absence of any further mixing for a period of time sufficient to produce the desired crystalline faujasite of the zeolite 'X' type, and (d) recovering said zeolite 'X'.

Process for preparation of zeolite 'X'

A crosslinkable composition suitable for use as an infiltrant or as a binder for ceramic powders, such as silicon carbide and/or silicon nitride, in a formulation intended to be injection molded or extruded comprises about 40-70% by weight of a low molecular weight polysilazane, about 15-35% by weight of a medium molecular weight polysilazane, and about 5-30% by weight of an unsaturated organic or organosilicon compound containing at least two alkenyl groups. A preferred unsaturated compound is methylvinylcyclosilazane.

Preceramic polysilazane compositions

A crosslinkable preceramic composition suitable for use as an infiltrant for porous ceramics, such as fiber-reinforced ceramic composites, comprises about 75-99% by weight of a low molecular weight polysilazane and about 1-25% by weight of an unsaturated organic or organosilicon compound containing at least two alkenyl groups, preferably methylvinylcyclosilazane. Infiltration of composites with the infiltrant can be accomplished by melt or solution infiltration, and the subsequent pyrolysis of the infiltrant results in the formation of a densified ceramic article having improved strength.

Preceramic compositions and ceramic products with an unsaturated organic

Fiber-reinforced ceramic composites are obtained by the use of a prepreg comprising sized carbon fibers bonded together with a matrix composition which comprises about 25-60% by weight of a polysilazane and about 75-40% by weight of at least two ceramic powders selected from silicon metal, silicon carbide and silicon boride powders.
