The present invention is a method and apparatus for applying one-dimensional proximity correction to a piece of a mask pattern, by segmenting a first piece of a mask pattern with horizontal dividing lines into a plurality of segments, segmenting a second piece of said mask pattern with said horizontal dividing lines into a second plurality of segments, and applying proximity correction to a first segment from said first plurality of segments taking into consideration a second segment from said second plurality of segments.

A physical design automation system produces an optimal placement of microelectronic components or cells on an integrate circuit chip. An initial population of possible cell placements is generated, and repeatedly altered using simulated on or other fitness improvement algorithm to progressively increase the fitnesses (decrease the costs) of the placements. After each alteration step, the fitnesses of the placements are calculated, and less fit placements are discarded in favor of more fit placements. After a termination criterion is reached, the placement having the highest fitness is designated as the optimal placement. Two or more fitness improvement algorithms are available, and are optimally switched from one to the other in accordance with an optimization criterion to maximize convergence of the placements toward the optimal configuration.

Several inventions are disclosed. A cell architecture using hexagonal shaped cells is disclosed. The architecture is not limited to hexagonal shaped cells. Cells may be defined by clusters of two or more hexagons, by triangles, by parallelograms, and by other polygons enabling a variety of cell shapes to be accommodated. Polydirectional non-orthogonal three layer metal routing is disclosed. The architecture may be combined with the tri-directional routing for a particularly advantageous design. In the tri-directional routing arraingement, electrical conductors for interconnecting terminals of microelectronic cells of an integrated circuit preferrably extend in three directions that are angularly displaced from each other by 60&deg;. The conductors that extend in the three directions are preferrably formed in three different layers. A method of minimizing wire length in a semiconductor device is disclosed. A method of minimizing intermetal capacitance in a semiconductor device is disclosed. A novel device called a &ldquo;tri-ister&rdquo; is disclosed. A system for determining an affinity associated with relocating a cell located on a surface of a semiconductor chip to a different location on the surface is disclosed herein. Each cell may be part of a cell net containing multiple cells. The system initially defines a bounding box containing all cells in the net which contains the cell. The system then establishes a penalty vector based on the bounding box and borders of a region containing the cell, computes a normalized sum of penalties for all nets having the cell as a member, and calculates the affinity based on the normalized sum of penalties. Also included in the disclosed system are methods and apparatus for capacity and utilization planning of the use of the floor, or the surface area, and the methods and apparatus for parallelizing the process of affinity based placements using multiple processors. Finally, method and apparatus for connecting the cells based on a Steiner Tree method is disclosed.

A large number of possible cell placements for an integrated circuit chip are evaluated to determine which has the highest fitness in accordance with a predetermined criteria such as interconnect congestion. Each cell placement, which constitutes an individual permutation of cells from a population of possible permutations, is represented as an initial cell placement in combination with a list of individual cell transpositions or swaps by which the cell placement can be derived from the initial cell placement. A cell placement can be genetically mutated and/or inverted by adding swaps to the list for its cell placement which designates cells to be transposed. Genetic crossover can be performed by transposing swaps between the lists for two cell placements. This cell representation and transposition method enables any type of cell transposition to be performed without loss or duplication of cells or generation of illegal placements.

Triangular semiconductor or gate

A multithreaded wavefront routing system for simultaneously planning routes for wiring a semiconductor chip surface. The surface has a plurality of grids located thereon, and routes are planned according to a predetermined netlist. The system steps across the surface from a first location to a second location in a wave-type pattern. The system sequentially steps through the grid arrangement on the chip surface and plans routing one grid at a time using a plurality of threaded processors. The system recognizes pins as it steps through grids and determines a plan for the current grid by evaluating current wire position, target pin location, and any currently planned routes, designating reserved locations wherein the route may be planned subsequent to the current grid, and establishing a wire direction for each wire traversing the current grid. The system plans wiring through grids using multiple threaded processors employing shared memory and a semi-hard coded rule based expert system applying heuristics by planning various routes based on current and potential wire locations. The system propagates wiring and performs memory bookkeeping functions. The system also has the capability to plan an additional route from one target pin toward a first pin. Meetings between routes are designated and resolved. Reservations may be established when a processor plans a route. Mutex locks may be utilized to avoid multiprocessor conflicts.

The capacity of a cache memory is substantially reduced over that required for a multi-chip distributed shared memory (DSM) implementation to enable the cache memory, a main memory, a processor and requisite logic and control circuitry to fit on a single integrated circuit chip. The increased cache miss rate created by the reduced cache memory capacity is compensated for by the reduced cache miss resolution period resulting from integrating the main memory and processor on the single chip. The reduced cache miss resolution period enables the processor clock rate to be substantially increased, so that a processor having a simple functionality such as a reduced instruction set computer (RISC) processor can be utilized and still provide the required processing speed. The RISC processor is substantially smaller than a more complicated processor that would be required to provide the same processing speed in a multi-chip DSM implementation, thereby enabling the RISC processor to fit on the chip with the other elements. A single-chip communications node that can be used in telecommunications networks other than DSM includes a memory controller for providing local and remote memory coherency, and a bidirectional interconnect unit that converts memory access instructions into memory access messages and vice-versa.

A method for maximizing effectiveness of parallel processing, using multiple processors, to connect pins of a net of an integrated circuit is disclosed. The method requires the pins to be partitioned into sets of pins and the sets of pins to be further partitioned into meta-sets of the sets of pins. The sets and the meta-sets are connected using a minimal spanning tree algorithm, and the connected sets are made to share a pin, thereby ensuring that the whole net is interconnected without creating a loop in the routing. In addition, because the partitions and the sets of partitions average approximately the same number of pins, the work load can easily be balanced between the processors.
