Methods for fabricating a honeycomb extrusion die from a die body include the step of machining extrusion slots with at least one grinding wheel to provide a honeycomb pattern of extrusion slots. In further examples, a plurality of the extrusion slots of the honeycomb pattern of extrusion slots can be machined with a wire electrical discharge machining process after machining the plurality of extrusion slots of the honeycomb pattern of extrusion slots with the grinding wheel.

Methods of fabricating a honeycomb extrusion die from a die body

Methods are provided for solving a process function for modification of a non-test die for use in extrusion of a honeycomb body. The process function is solved by comparing measured widths of a plurality of slots between pins of a test die in the post-removal state and measured widths of a plurality of slots between pins of the test die in the pre-removal state. Methods are also provided for modifying a non-test die for use in extrusion of a honeycomb body. Such methods remove non-test-die material from a plurality of pins of the non-test die based on application of the process function.

Method of solving a process function for manufacturing an extrusion die

Extruded honeycomb products are formed by means of an extrusion die incorporating a pin support section positioned between the die body and the pin array forming the die discharge slots, the pin support providing enlarged support segments that improve pin stability and die resistance to pin damage without overly restricting batch flow through the die.
