Nonstoichiometric carbon-sulfur compounds have been found to be effective adsorbents for separating organic vapors from a gaseous mixture. Separation of aromatic compounds from gaseous mixtures is particularly effective using such compounds. The spent adsorbent may then be regenerated.

Vapor phase adsorption using nonstoichiometric carbon-sulfur compounds

Nonstoichiometric carbon-sulfur compounds have been found to be effective adsorbents for removing a wide variety of organic and/or inorganic materials from liquids, preferably polar liquids. Removal of biorefractory organics, such as aromatics, is particularly effective using such compounds. The spent adsorbent may then be regenerated.

The present invention is directed to an electric current-producing cell which contains: (a) an anode having as its anode-active material one or more alkali metals; (b) a cathode having as its cathode-active material one or more polymer compounds having a plurality of carbon monosulfide units; and (c) an electrolyte which is chemically inert with respect to said anode and said cathode and which permits the migration of ions between said anode and said cathode.

The present invention is directed to compositions of matter having the formula M.sub.2 UO.sub.2 F.sub.2 where each M is any alkali metal ion or mixtures thereof. The present invention is also directed to electrochemical cells having anodes containing anode-active alkali metal, electrolytes capable of conducting ions of said alkali metal, and cathodes containing cathode-active material having the formula M.sub.2 UO.sub.2 F.sub.2 where each M is any alkali metal ion or mixtures thereof. In another embodiment the cathode-active material has the formula UO.sub.2 F.sub.2.

The remote temperature measurement of a fluid is determined by Raman backscattered radiation from the fluid where the fluid is subjected to intense pulses of laser radiation generated at a remote location. The backscattered radiation is filtered to selectively attenuate reflected radiation from the laser and is transmitted to a detector system which individually counts the detected radiation in each of two different radiated frequencies. A divider generates a ratio of the count which is transformed by a function generator to produce an output signal indicative of fluid temperature.
