A nanowire memory device and a method of manufacturing the same are provided. A memory device includes: a substrate; a first electrode formed on the substrate; a first nanowire extending from an end of the first electrode; a second electrode formed over the first electrode to overlap the first electrode; and a second nanowire extending from an end of the second electrode corresponding to the end of the first electrode in the same direction as the first nanowire, wherein an insulating layer exists between the first and second electrodes.

In the method of fabricating a nanowire memory device which includes a substrate; an electrode formed on the substrate and insulated from the substrate; and a nanowire having its one end connected with the electrode and formed at a given length, the method comprises: forming an electrode and a dummy electrode to be paired with the electrode on the substrate; forming the nanowire between the electrode and the dummy electrode while measuring a current flowing between the electrode and the dummy electrode, and cutting power applied between the electrode and the dummy electrode when the current measured is a given value; and removing the dummy electrode.

Nonvolatile carbon nanotube memory device using multiwall carbon nanotubes and methods of operating and fabricating the same

A hard disk drive (HDD) includes a spindle motor, an actuator, a static eccentricity sensor, a monitor and a central controller. The spindle motor includes a rotary body and a static body adapted to support the rotary body, where the spindle motor is adapted to rotate a disk. The actuator is adapted to move a read/write head over the disk. The static eccentricity sensor is adapted to measure static eccentricity associated with the rotary body. The monitor is adapted to monitor the measured static eccentricity and generate a free-fall signal when the monitor determines that the HDD is in a free-fall state. The central controller is adapted to initiate an unloading/parking operation for the read/write head in response to the free-fall signal.

Hard disk drive adapted to detect free-fall and perform emergency parking of read/write head prior to impact

A suspension assembly of an actuator of a hard disk drive prevents collisions with a data storage disk of the drive. The suspension assembly includes a load beam, a bracket having a rear end at which the bracket is coupled to the load beam and a flexure, a slider that is attached to the bracket and carries the read/write head of the hard disk drive, and a limiting mechanism capable of selectively attaching and detaching a respective portion of the bracket to and from the load beam during operation. The load beam has a dimple projecting toward the bracket and which normally contacts a first surface of the bracket. The slider is attached to a second surface of the bracket opposite the first surface. The limiting mechanism attaches a portion of the bracket bearing the slider to the load beam when the read/write head is unloaded from the disk. Therefore, the wobbling of the slider is suppressed during the unloading operation. On the other hand, the portion of the bracket bearing the slider is detached from the load beam during a read/write operation to allow the slider to pitch and roll more freely about the dimple.

Hard disk drive, suspension assembly of actuator of hard disk drive, and method of operation of hard disk drive

A fluid dynamic bearing is constructed to support stably a rotating body to which a non-uniform force is applied, and a hard disk drive (HDD) employing the fluid dynamic bearing is provided. The fluid dynamic bearing includes a journal bearing part supporting a rotary shaft in a radial direction of the rotary shaft, a thrust part formed at one end of the rotary shaft, a thrust bearing part facing the thrust part and supporting the rotary shaft in a longitudinal direction of the rotary shaft, and a plurality of grooves formed on a surface of the thrust bearing part and/or the thrust part. The plurality of grooves include a first groove group including a plurality of grooves having the same shape and arrangement, and a second groove group adjacent to the first groove group and including at least one groove asymmetric with respect to the grooves of the first groove group.

Fluid dynamic bearing and hard disk drive employing the same

Embodiments of the invention provide a hard disk drive (HDD) adapted to detect when an HDD is in a free-fall state and park a head prior to impact. The HDD comprises a spindle motor comprising a rotary body and adapted to rotate a disk, wherein the disk is adapted to store data; an actuator adapted to move a read/write head to a desired position above the disk in order to read/write data; and a flying height sensor adapted to measure a flying height of the rotary body in real time. The HDD further comprises a monitor adapted to monitor the measured flying height and generate a free-fall signal when the monitor determines that the HDD is in a free-fall state; and a central controller adapted to initiate an operation for parking the read/write head in response to the free-fall signal.

A spindle motor assembly includes a spindle motor having a shaft and a hub that rotates on the shaft, and a hard disk having a data storage medium mounted in the form of a whole disk, and a fastener attached to the center of a bottom surface of the disk-shaped data storage medium that faces the spindle motor. The fastener is a screw or a nut. In the case in which the fastener is a screw, a head of the screw is attached to the bottom surface of the hard disk, and the body of the screw is received in a screw hole in the upper portion of the shaft of the spindle motor. In the case in which the fastener is a nut, the nut is engaged with an external thread on an outer circumferential surface of the hub of the spindle motor.

Provided are a voice coil motor (VCM) driving method for an HDD, related head unloading apparatus and recording media suitable for implementing the driving method. The method of driving a VCM to park a head on a ramp in the HDD includes; driving the VCM using a first driving voltage until the head moves to a first position; and thereafter driving the VCM using a second driving voltage higher than the first driving voltage during a first time period sufficient cause the head to rise along a first incline of the ramp.

An actuator arm of an actuator assembly includes a 4-bar linkage structure defined by a trapezoidal shaped opening formed between a front end of the actuator arm and a pivot shaft. A method for writing a spiral reference servo signal suitable for a self-servo writing method in a hard disk drive includes writing a first reference pattern in an end direction of a spiral reference servo signal writing concentrically on the disk; writing a spiral reference servo signal on a current spiral track from a reference writing start position of the current spiral track; detecting a moving angle of a head to the first reference pattern, which corresponds to a distance from the reference writing start position to a reference writing end position of the spiral reference servo signal in the case that thermal expansion of the disk does not exist; compensating for a driving speed of the head with reference to the detected moving angle of the head; and writing the spiral reference servo signal on a next spiral track at a compensated driving speed of the head.

Method for writing spiral reference servo signal in hard disk drive and method for compensating for temperature

An apparatus is provided for gripping nano-scale objects, wherein the apparatus includes a probe including a base portion and a terminal portion. First and second nanotubes are secured to the base portion of the probe, wherein each of the first and second nanotubes include a protruding portion which extends past the base portion and the terminal portion of the probe. First and second electrodes are formed on the base portion of the probe and electrically connected to the first and second nanotubes. A third electrode is disposed on the terminal portion of the probe. A control circuit applies a voltage to the first, second and third electrodes to close the protruding portions of the first and second nanotubes by charging the first and second nanotubes to a first polarity and charging the third electrode to a second polarity opposite to the first polarity.
