Compositions comprising a cyclic urea type compound in a liquid or solid vehicle comprising a fatty acid ester of glycerol, or a fatty acid ester of polyethylene glycol, or a mixture thereof, wherein said vehicle has an hydrophil-lipophil balance of at least about 10, and, optionally, other excipients are described. The compositions are useful for providing good systemic absorption of the cyclic urea compounds when administered enterally, especially orally. The subject compounds and compositions are useful for treating viral infections, particularly HIV infection, in a mammal.

Pharmaceutical formulations of cyclic urea type compounds

Topical polyethylene glycol based formulations for the delivery of 2-substituted-1-naphthols and indoles and particularly, 2-phenylmethyl-1-naphthol are provided. Said topical formulations exert excellent localized antiinflammatory activity while demonstrating low levels of skin penetration in vitro and in vivo thereby reducing unwanted side effects and reducing systemic toxicity associated with the active drug compounds.

Topical antinflammatory compositions with minimal systemic absorption

Substituted benzoate ester prodrugs of .beta.-estradiol and ethynyl estradiol are provided which have improved bioavailability and extended duration of action when administered orally.

Opioid-containing pharmaceutical compositions are provided which are useful in effecting transdermal delivery of a therapeutic dose of the opioid to the systemic circulation of a mammal. These pharmaceutical compositions consist essentially of the opioid, a penetration enhancer which is at least one of a saturated fatty alcohol or fatty acid of 8-15 carbon atoms or of an unsaturated fatty alcohol or fatty acid of 8-18 carbon atoms, and a suitable pharmaceutical carrier, preferably propylene glycol.
