A method of making the circuitized substrate. The circuitized substrate includes a substrate having a substantially planar upper surface and a conductive layer positioned on the substantially planar upper surface. The conductive layer includes at least one side wall therein, defining an opening in the conductive layer. The conductive layer includes an end portion spaced from the opening, the end portion forming an acute angle with the substantially planar upper surface of the substrate. The at least one side wall is substantially perpendicular to the substantially planar upper surface of the substrate.

Method of making a circuitized substrate

A method of making a circuitized substrate. A conductive layer having a substantially planar upper surface is formed on and in direct mechanical contact with an upper surface of a substrate. A portion of the conductive layer is removed to form an interim side wall in the conductive layer. A layer of patternable material is formed on the substantially planar upper surface and on the interim side wall. A portion of the layer of patternable material on the conductive layer is removed to expose the interim side wall. A portion of the substantially planar upper surface is removed to form a side wall in the layer of patternable material. Portions of the interim side wall in the conductive layer are removed to form a second side wall and a bottom wall defined by the upper surface of the substrate. The second side wall is substantially perpendicular to the bottom wall.

A method of forming a plurality of solid conductive bumps for interconnecting two conductive layers of a circuit board with substantially coplanar upper surfaces. The method comprises the steps of applying a continuous homogenous metal layer onto a dielectric substrate, applying a first photoresist and exposing and developing said first photoresist to define a pattern of conductive bumps, etching the metal layer exposed by said development to form said plurality of conductive bumps, removing said first photoresist, applying a second photoresist onto the metal layer, exposing and developing said second photoresist to define a pattern of conductive bumps and circuit lines; etching the metal layer exposed by said development to form a pattern of circuit lines in said metal layer; and removing said second photoresist. The methods of the present invention also provides for fabricating a multilayer circuit board and a metallic border for providing rigidity to a panel.

Manufacturing methods for printed circuit boards

A circuitized substrate and a method of making the circuitized substrate is provided. The circuitized substrate includes a substrate having a substantially planar upper surface and a conductive layer positioned on the substantially planar upper surface. The present invention provides a new device and method for enhancing the electrical properties of the thick metal backer/electrically conductive thermoset adhesive/printed circuit board or card assembly. The enhanced electrical properties are obtained by providing a thin bondline of conductive adhesive that is essentially void free.

A method of fabricating a printed circuit device including an electrically insulating substrate, and first, second, and third sets of conductors formed on a top surface of the substrate is disclosed. The method includes forming an oxide layer on the set of second conductors; forming a solder mask on the oxide layer; forming a composite layer on the first set of conductors; and forming a solder layer on at least a portion of the third set of conductors.

A method of forming a printed circuit board comprising a plurality of conductive bumps with substantially coplanar upper surfaces. The method comprises the steps of applying a metal layer onto a dielectric substrate; applying a first photoresist onto said substrate and exposing and developing said first photoresist to define a pattern of conductive bumps; etching the metal layer exposed by said development to form said plurality of conductive bumps; removing said first photoresist; applying a second photoresist onto the metal layer; exposing and developing said second photoresist to define a pattern of conductive bumps and circuit lines; etching the metal layer exposed by said development to form a pattern of circuit lines in said metal layer; and removing said second photoresist. The present invention is also provides a method for preparing a reinforced panel.

Printed circuit board with mixed metallurgy pads and method of fabrication

A wiring board for mounting an electrical device, which has an array of connectors thereon arranged in a grid pattern, wherein the connectors have at least two levels of criticality of connection to the substrate. The substrate has a plurality of mounting structure or features arranged in the same grid pattern to connect with the array of connectors on the electrical device. The mounting structures or features are divided into a plurality of at least two groups, with each group corresponding to a level of criticality of the connectors on the device. Each group of mounting structures has a discernible feature differing from each other group, to thereby permit different levels of inspection criteria for each group. The invention also contemplates a method of forming a substrate having the features for connecting the connectors on the device that have different levels of criticality

Structure and method for forming the same of a printed wiring board having built-in inspection aids

A printed circuit board comprising a plurality of conductive bumps having substantially coplanar upper surfaces is provided. The circuit board is formed by providing: a substantially planar metallic layer having a first thickness on at least one surface of the dielectric; applying a first photoresist on the metal layer; imaging the first photoresist to define a pattern of conductive bumps; etching the exposed portions of the metal layer to a second thickness to form the conductive bumps; removing the first photoresist; applying a second photoresist to the metal layer; imaging the second photoresist to define a pattern of circuitry; etching the exposed portions of the metal layer to provide the electrical circuitry; and removing the second photoresist. The present invention also provides a method for preparing printed circuit boards wherein two conductive layers that are disposed on opposing sides of a dielectric layer are inter-connected by at least one of the substantially coplanar conductive bumps. The method comprises the additional steps of depositing a second dielectric layer on the substantially coplanar conductive bumps and circuitry; exposing the upper surface of at least one of the conductive bumps; and depositing a second metal layer on the second dielectric layer and the exposed upper surface of the conductive bump. The present invention is also related to a method for preparing a reinforced panel. The method comprises the steps of: applying a metal layer having a first height on at least one surface of a dielectric substrate; applying a first photoresist to the metal layer, imaging the photoresist to provide at least one section of remaining photoresist defining an opening therein and at least one exposed region of the metal layer; etching the exposed region of the metal layer to a second height; and removing the remaining photoresist to provide a multi-layered structure comprising a dielectric layer and a metal layer comprising at least one region having a second height and at least one region having a first height.

Printed circuit board with continuous connective bumps

The present invention provides a new device and technique for enhancing the electrical properties of the thick metal backer/adhesive bond/ground plane interface. The enhanced electrical properties are obtained by micro-roughening a connection surface of the thick metal backer prior to forming the thick metal backer/adhesive bond/ground plane interface.
