A CPU generates time stamp data using a timed result for the present time timed by timer and a set expression pattern. Then, the CPU generates modified time stamp data for a predetermined time period based on the time stamp data. The CPU identifies the maximum time stamp data through the printing range of the above time stamp data. The CPU reduces the font size until the maximum time stamp data becomes printable onto the printing medium. The CPU then sets the reduced font size as the font size for each time stamp data, etc., and carries out printing.

In a printing apparatus, the number of delimiters included in received data from a host apparatus is smaller than the number of input items of a template by one. Therefore, the number of delimiters included in the received data from the host apparatus is calculated to be three. A character string which is periodically repeated in the received data three times as the number of the delimiters is obtained and set to be a delimiter candidate. Further, a print start character string candidate is obtained from a data group which is located after a last delimiter candidate in the received data. Using the provisionally determined candidates for a delimiter and a print start character string, the four item data included in the received data are assumed. A head 18 and a cutting unit 23 are provided. The head 18 prints on a print layer of a laminated tape formed by laminating the print layer to a separation layer. A character string and data characters for printing a bar code are first input, and a print key is operated. When the data read from a text memory of the apparatus are character data, the apparatus creates dot pattern data for printing the character string as per the character size selected. When bar code starting data are read, the data following the characters are read out and converted into bar code data. After the data representing a left-hand side margin of the bar code are generated, dot pattern data constituting the bar code are created in accordance with the height of the character size selected. Then, a right-hand side margin of the bar code is generated.
