Startups and Pivoting: Embrace the Unexpected
In the world of startups, the original idea is often as fleeting as your New Year’s resolutions. Pivoting isn’t just an option; it’s practically a rite of passage. Take Figma, for instance. They kicked things off designing drones, but now they’re the go-to tool for design teams. YouTube? It was supposed to be a video-dating site. Can you imagine your first date broadcasted for the world to see? Awkward! And Slack? It started as a gaming platform. Imagine trying to coordinate your team’s dungeon raid rather than your work projects.

The truth is, no matter how groundbreaking your initial concept seems, chances are you’ll end up somewhere completely different. That’s because the real goal isn’t to stubbornly stick to your first idea but to build something people actually want.

So, embrace the pivot! It’s like that plot twist in a movie that you didn’t see coming but ends up making the story unforgettable. Who knows, your next big idea might be just a pivot away from revolutionizing the world — or at least getting people to swipe right more often.

Remember, in the startup world, the only constant is change, and that’s where the magic happens.

Today in Patent History

On July 23, 1929, the U.S. Patent Office granted Schick a patent for his new “shaving implement.” With the proceeds from his popular “repeating razor,” Schick resumed his quest to design a “dry razor,” resulting in his invention of the electric shaving razor in 1930. Today, the eponymous shaving razor company founded by Schick is a household name, selling millions of razors annually, and remains headquartered in Connecticut.
