Welcome to the 14th of May 2024: Our goal is to celebrate the patent holders who have reached noteworthy milestones in their fields this week.

Xiaoxia Zhang

Zhang received a Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from The Ohio State University in 2002. the B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Science and Technology of China.

She joined Qualcomm after graduation and has worked on 3G, 4G, and 5G, including PHY/MAC system designs, evaluation, prototyping, and standardization.

Xiaoxia is currently a Senior Director of technology with Qualcomm, where she is currently leading a project, focusing on the Industrial IoT, shared/unlicensed spectrum, and RAN disaggregation on 5G technology. 

Patent №: 11985702 (May 14, 2024) – Joint channel sensing operations for a wireless communication system. A wireless communication method involves a UE device performing direction-based channel sensing with a base station during the first window of a frame period. Based on the results, the UE decides whether to communicate with the base station in the second window.

Patent №: 11985691 (May 14, 2024) – Non-transparent single frequency network scheme. A UE receives downlink control information (DCI) indicating multiple TCI states for a PDSCH. The UE differentiates if these TCI states apply to all DMRS ports or layers, or to different sets. It then generates a composite QCL based on the TCI states and receives the PDSCH using this composite QCL.

Patent №: 11985683 (May 14, 2024) – Conditions for simultaneous physical uplink shared channel transmissions. A UE receives from a base station an indication of uplink grants for PUSCH messages, which include a first and second PUSCH message that partially overlap in time. Based on conditions for simultaneous PUSCH transmissions, such as resource or DMRS alignment, the UE transmits at least one of the PUSCH messages.

Patent №: 11985649 (May 14, 2024) – Modifications to uplink grant configurations. This request may include decreased periodicity, more repetition groups, additional resource blocks, or a higher modulation coding scheme. The base station responds with a modified or new uplink grant configuration for higher density transmissions.

Patent №: 11985643 (May 14, 2024) – DCI design for multi-cross carrier scheduling. It transmits a PDCCH with a cross carrier schedule to a UE. The PDCCH includes DCI that schedules the transmissions, specifying RBs through at least one FDRA field. The base station then communicates with the UE based on this cross carrier schedule.

Patent №: 11985632 (May 14, 2024) – Resource allocation mode indication for resource pool sharing. . A transmitter UE identifies a sidelink resource allocation mode indicating how sidelink resources are allocated. The UE then transmits sidelink control information (SCI) to a receiver UE, which includes an indication based on this allocation mode.

Patent №: 11985604 (May 14, 2024) – Pathloss reference signal update for multiple beams. A UE receives a control message indicating an uplink power control configuration linked to a power control identifier and a resource set identifier. Another control message schedules an uplink message and specifies these identifiers.

Patent №: 11985021 (May 14, 2024) – Phase tracking reference signal for multi-transmit/receive points. A UE scheduled for a PDSCH with DMRS ports in two DMRS CDM groups, associated with two TCI states, is configured to use two PT-RS ports. Instead of a single port, PT-RS is transmitted using two ports.

Gavin Bernard Horn

Senior Director Engineering at Qualcomm

Since 2014, he has been leading the 5G upper layer research as part of the successful completion in Dec 2017 non-standalone and June 2018 standalone standardization preparing for NR commercial deployments in 2019.

Gavin joined Qualcomm in 2003 contributing to the upper layer design for 4G including many of the advanced features such as femtos, relays, unlicensed and D2D.

Since 2008 he has worked in system design, prototyping, and standardization of LTE and LTE-advanced.  Gavin received his PhD from Caltech in 1999.

Patent №: 11985710 (May 14, 2024) – Configurations for small data transmission. The UE receives configuration parameters for small data transmission via broadcast system information or unicast messages from the base station. Based on this configuration, the UE transmits user data and a random access preamble on resources reserved for small data transmission.

Patent №: 11985557 (May 14, 2024) – Signaling for conditional primary secondary cell addition/change configuration. Each candidate PSCell provides information for the MN to create a conditional PSCell addition (CPA) or change (CPC) configuration, sent to a user equipment (UE). This information includes execution conditions and supported radio bearers.

Patent №: 11985553 (May 14, 2024) – Techniques for inter-system handing over from a standalone to a non-standalone mode. A master node (MN) receives information about candidate target secondary nodes (SNs) for a multi-radio access technology dual connectivity (MR-DC) handover of a user equipment (UE). This information includes details about direct forwarding paths with the source RAN node of the UE

Patent №: 11985082 (May 14, 2024) – Method for reporting channel state information according to DRX mode operation in wireless communication system, and device for same.

A method for reporting CSI in a COMP system involves a terminal receiving DRX configuration information from two base stations. The terminal also receives CSI report configuration information for a first BWP and a second BWP from both base stations. Each BWP consists of multiple subbands. The configuration information is received during specific times based on the DRX configuration.

His past experiences include being at IBM as a Lead Data Scientist and Dristi as a CTO.

Patent №: 11985183 (May 14, 2024) – Automatic information exchange between personal electronic devices upon determination of a business setting. Methods, systems, and computer programs include detecting a first personal device associated with a first user near a second personal device associated with a second user in a business setting. User data about the second user is then received and stored for the first user to access on their device.
