Abstract

A reciprocating cryogenic pumpcomprises a piston reciprocable within a pumping chamber. The pumping chamberhas an inlet suction valvefor cryogenic liquid to be pumped and an outletfor high pressure cryogenic liquid. The inlet valvefor the cryogenic liquid communicates with a cryogenic liquid reception chamberin the cold end or headof the pump. The pump headis at least partially surrounded by a first jacketretaining primary vacuum insulation. The first jacketis itself at least partly surrounded by a second jacket. The jacketdefines a chamber for the reception of a coolant fluid such as liquid nitrogen and the second jacket has an inletand an outletfor the liquid nitrogen. The thermal insulation can be further enhanced by a trapped gas spacebetween the first jacketand an inner sleeve, the latter defining with an outer sleevevacuum insulation for the pumping chamber
