Abstract

According to the present invention, a monolithically integrated laser, also referred to herein as a U-laser, or integrated dual optical emission laser, having a first optical emissionand a second optical emissionwhere both the first and second optical emissionsof the monolithically integrated laserare in optical communication with a modulatoror other device is provided. The integrated dual emission lasercan be formed with a light bending portionin variety of configurations including a waveguide in the form of a U-shape, or total internal reflection (TIR) mirrors, curved waveguides, and free-space etched gap mirrors. The integrated dual optical emission lasercan also have two laser gain sections, one on each arm of the laserto control gain.
