Abstract

A negative electrode for an alkaline secondary battery includes a current collecting substrate having a substrate containing iron. The current collecting substrate does not have a conductive protecting layer, or has a conductive protecting layer having a thickness of 3 μm or less or having defects, on the substrate. The negative electrode contains magnesium or a magnesium compound and a hydrogen storing alloy.
