A rechargeable lithium battery that includes a negative electrode including a silicon-based negative active material; a positive electrode including a positive active material being capable of intercalating and deintercalating lithium; and a non-aqueous electrolyte, wherein the silicon-based negative active material includes a SiO(0<x<2) core including Si grains and a continuous or discontinuous coating layer including Ag, the coating layer being disposed on the core.
