Abstract

A method is provided to synthesize nanocomposites containing intercalated FeF— or FeO— nanoparticles in a graphitic carbon matrix by reaction of a volatile iron compound with a graphite fluoride (CF) or a graphite oxide (CO). Additionally provided is a nanocomposite material containing intercalated FeF— or FeO— nanoparticles in a graphitic carbon matrix and its use as an electrochemically active material in particular for use in electrochemical storage cells.
