Abstract
A steering column for preventing separation of inner columnand outer columnis provided in the state before assembly in a vehicle body or in the state after a secondary collision without requiring additional components. The steering column includes a long engaging holeextending in the axial direction and provided in the upper portion of the front section of the outer column. An engaging pieceis integrally formed with the upper portion of the rear section of the inner column, and this engaging pieceis moved into the long engaging holeso as to be able to displace along the long engaging hole. When assembled in a vehicle body, as the engaging pieceis displaced along the long engaging hole, both the inner column and outer columnare allowed to displace relative to each other within a telescopic adjustment range. In the state before being assembled in the vehicle body, the engagement between the engaging pieceand the front end edge of the long engaging holeprevent the inner column and outer columnfrom coming apart in the axial direction.
