Abstract

A tracheostomy instrument () used for inserting a tracheostomy tube has a needle () with colored bands () along its length and connected with a syringe () at its machine end. The syringe () is used to detect when the trachea () has been penetrated; the depth of penetration is indicated by observing which colored band () aligns with the skin surface (). The machine end of the tracheostomy tube shaft () has a number of colored bands () corresponding to the bands () on the needle (). A flange () is movable along the tube () and is locked in position against the colored band () corresponding to the band () on the needle () aligned with the skin surface ().
