Abstract

The present invention relates to a positive electrode active material for a lithium secondary battery having improved thermal stability, a method for producing the positive electrode active material, and a lithium secondary battery containing the same. The positive electrode active material may be represented by the following Chemical Formula 1 and contain particles having an average particle size of 200 nm to 1 μm, wherein the surfaces of the particles are coated with a uniform carbon coating layer.LiMnMPO  [Chemical Formula 1](Where, M is any one or a mixture of two or more selected from Mg, Fe, Co, Cr, Ti, Ni, Cu, Zn, Zr, Nb, and Mo, and a and x satisfy the following Equations: 0.9≦a≦1.1 and 0≦x<0.5.).
