Abstract

A method includes electing an item of active master equipment from two redundant primary and secondary master items of equipment (), the primary and secondary master items of equipment () being directly connected to a fieldbus () and linked together by a terminal cable () and each having an active operating mode and a standby mode. Each of the primary and secondary master items of equipment () also has one and the same state machine () for designating one of the primary and secondary master items of equipment () as the active master item of equipment, and the terminal cable () used for establishing a directional relation of the primary master item of equipment () to the secondary master item of equipment ().
