Abstract

An image display device includes: excitation light source (), fluorescent screen () provided with a plurality of phosphor regions () that are arranged periodically in the in-plane direction, the regions between phosphor regions being retroreflective regions () that bend incident light in the direction opposite the direction of incidence of the light; scanning means () that scans fluorescent screen () with a light beam from excitation light source (); optical detection means () that detects retroreflective light () that is reflected by retroreflective regions (); and control means () that causes scanning by scanning means (), detects boundaries between each phosphor region () and retroreflective region () on fluorescent screen () based on output of optical detection means (), and controls the light emission timing of excitation light source () based on the detected boundaries.
