A handheld work apparatus has an electric drive motor () and a power supply unit for the drive motor (). The power supply unit is arranged in a receptacle () of a housing () of the work apparatus. The work apparatus has an electronic control () and a blower wheel () for conveying cooling air. The blower wheel () is driven by a drive motor (). The housing () has at least one air inlet opening () for cooling air via which the blower wheel () draws in a first cooling air flow () during operation.
