Abstract

A method of scanning neighboring target RATs (Radio Access Technology). The method according to one embodiment includes transmitting a message including a field indicating whether or not the mobile station supports the inter-RAT handover while performing a network entry process; transmitting a request for information about another RAT only if the inter-RAT handover is supported by the mobile station; and, in response to the request, receiving information about a recommended RAT from the base station. The information about the recommended RAT is selected based on the location information. The method according to the embodiment further includes performing the scanning of the neighboring target RATs using the information about the recommended RAT; and reporting a result of the scanning. The performing of the scanning is triggered when channel quality falls below a certain threshold. The receiving information is in response to, both, the transmitted message, and the transmitted request.
