Abstract
A portable electronic device comprises a proximity-sensing user interface and a controller. The proximity-sensing user interface is configured to capture position information and distance information. The controller is coupled to the proximity-sensing user interface and is configured to process first distance information () captured by the proximity-sensing user interface during a pre-determined touch action, to determine whether a material layer () is interposed between the user's skin and the proximity-sensing user interface. The controller is configured to selectively set an input mode from a first input mode to a second input mode when the first distance information indicates that no material layer () is interposed between the user's skin and the proximity-sensing user interface.
