Disclosed are merocyanine derivatives which correspond to the formula (I), wherein L, Land Lindependently of each other are hydrogen; or Land Lmay be linked together to form a carbocyclic ring; Rand Rindependently of each other are CN; —COR; —COOR; —CONRR; C-Calkyl; C-Calkenyl; C-Calkinyl; C-Ccycloalkyl; C-Ccycloalkenyl; C-Caralkyl; C-Cheteroalkyl; C-Ccycloheteroalkyl; C-Cheteroaralkyl; C-Caryl; C-Calkylcarbonylamino-C-Caryl; C-Cheteroaryl; or —X—Sil; n is a number from 1 to 4; the meaning of Rand Rdepends on the definition of n. The compounds are useful as UV absorbers for cosmetic applications.
