Abstract

A method () of recovering tar from the gasification of a carbonaceous feedstock includes gasifying () a carbonaceous feedstock () to produce a raw gas () which includes at least CO, H, tar and entrained solids, the raw gas () being at a temperature of at least 250° C. and a pressure of at least 15 bar (g). The raw gas () is quenched and washed () with a quench liquid () producing a solids-containing liquid stream () which includes tars, the solids-containing liquid stream being at a temperature of at least 150° C. and a pressure of at least 15 bar (g). Solids () are separated () from the solids-containing liquid stream () to provide a tar recovery stream (). The tar recovery stream () is treated by at least cooling () and pressure expansion () thereof to produce a tar stream ().
