Abstract

An active material for a battery contains a YTiOScrystalline phase, and has an I/Ivalue of 0.3 or smaller and an I/Ivalue of 0.15 or smaller, wherein I, Iand Iare the peak intensity of the YTiOScrystalline phase at 2θ=34.5°, the peak intensity of a YTOcrystalline phase at 2θ35.6°, and the peak intensity of TiSat 2θ=34.1°, respectively, that are measured by X-ray diffraction using CuKα radiation. The active material is synthesized by preparing a raw material composition containing TiS, TiOand YOand having a molar ratio of TiSto YOof higher than 1 or containing TiS, TiOand YOand having a molar ratio of TiOto YOof lower than 1, and heating the raw material composition. A positive or negative-electrode active material layer included in the battery may be contain the active material.
