Abstract
An apparatus () for helping to protect an occupant () of a vehicle () includes an inflatable vehicle occupant protection device () having a deflated condition and an inflated condition. The protection device () includes a front portion () that has a panel () presented toward the occupant () when the protection device () is in the inflated condition and a rear portion () spaced from the front portion () when the protection device () is in the inflated condition. A lower connecting portion () connects the front portion () to the rear portion () and defines the lower extent of the protection device (). A space () is positioned outside the inflatable volume () of the protection device () and is defined between the front portion (), the connecting portion (), and the rear portion (). The space () extends from an upper extent of the protection device () down to below a midline of the protection device ().
