Abstract

A corona igniterincludes an electrode gapbetween the central electrodeand the insulatorand a shell gapbetween the insulatorand the shell. An electrically conductive coatingis disposed on the insulatoralong the gapsto prevent corona dischargein the gapsand to concentrate the energy at a firing tipof the central electrode. The electrically conductive coatingis disposed on an insulator inner surfaceand is spaced radially from the electrode. The electrically conductive coatingis also disposed on the insulator outer surfaceand is spaced radially from the shell. During operation of the igniter, the electrically conductive coatingprovides a reduced voltage drop across the gapsand a reduced electric field spike at the gaps
