An Internet telephony registrycomprises a serverand an associated data store. Routing and/or policy data associated with telephone number strings are stored in the data storein a tree data structureand a data index map. The tree data structurecomprises parent nodes and leaf nodes and each parent node of the tree data structurehas ten child nodes. The tree data structurestores an index associated with each telephone number string and the data index map stores routing and/or policy attributesrepresented by the indices
