Disclosed herein is a novel group of carbonitride and carbidonitride phosphors and light emitting devices which utilize these phosphors. In certain embodiments, the inventive phosphors are expressed as follows:CaSiCAlNOEu  (1)M(II)SiCM(III)NOH:A  (2)MSiCM(III)NOH:A  (3)CaSiAlNCO:Eu  (4)M(II)SiM(III)NCOH:A  (5)MSiM(III)NCOH:A  (6)wherein v is the valence number of M, 0≦m<5, 0≦n≦3, 0≦x<4, and 0≦y<1, M is at least one cation, M(II) is at least one divalent cation, M(III) is at least one trivalent cation, H is at least one monovalent anion, and A is a luminescence activator.
