Abstract
Lightweight blast mitigating composite panels () include a first glass composite shell (), an intermediate, preferably honeycomb layer (), a reinforcing layer (), an ultra high molecular weight polyethylene fiber (UHMWPE) layer () and a second glass composite shell () adhered together with fire resistant adhesive layers (). The UHMWPE layer () includes top and bottom coatings () of fire resistant thermoset plastic preferably in the form of a paste. The panels () have use in a wide range of applications including in a blast mitigating overhead storage bin (). The storage bin () includes a main body portion () defining a storage area formed from composite unarmored and armored panel segments (-). The unarmored and armored panel segments (-) share first and second shells () to form an integral main body portion, with the armored panel segments (-) providing blast protection between the storage area and a wall () of an airplane cabin ().
