Abstract
An oxide is provided that contains the oxide represented by Formula (I) as the main component thereof, that has a Verdet constant at a wavelength of 1.06 μm of at least 0.18 min/(Oe·cm), and that has a transmittance at a wavelength of 1.06 μm and for an optical length of 3 mm of at least 70%,(TbR)O  (I)wherein x is 0.4≦x≦1.0; R includes at least one element selected from the group consisting of scandium, yttrium, lanthanum, europium, gadolinium, ytterbium, holmium and lutetium.
