Abstract
A machine tool having an emergency braking system for abruptly braking a rotating shaft of the machine tool to protect a user of the machine tool, the emergency braking system having a brake drum that can be forced into engagement with the at least one brake shoe to brake the shaft. The brake drum and the at least one brake shoe are designed and configured in a way that allows the braking engagement therebetween to take place under the influence of a centrifugal force or centrifugal acceleration resulting from the rotation of a shaft.
