A lithium-ion battery has (a) an anode; (b) a cathode having a cathode composition of the formula Li[MMMn]O, wherein 0.083<y<0.5 with the proviso that Mand Mdo not include chromium, and wherein Mis Co and Mincludes the combination of Li and Ni; and (c) an electrolyte.
