Abstract
A method of transmitting data using electromagnetic waves, comprising the steps of providing () a first electromagnetic signal (S) having a first wavelength (λ) and a second electromagnetic signal (S) having a second wavelength (λ) different from the first wavelength; dividing () each of the first (S) and second (S) electromagnetic signals into a first polarization component (S; S) having a first polarization direction and a second polarization component (S; S) having a second polarization direction orthogonal to the first polarization direction; modulating () the first polarization component (S) of the first electromagnetic signal (S) to encode a first data stream (DS); modulating () the second polarization component (S) of the second electromagnetic signal (S) to encode a second data stream (DS); and transmitting () a combined electromagnetic signal (S) comprising the first and second polarization components of the first electromagnetic signal (S) and the first and second polarization components of the second electromagnetic signal (S).
