Abstract
A flow modulating device comprises flow modulating elementsof a shape memory alloy, which are acted upon by resilient elements. The flow modulating elementsand resilient elementsare mounted on a common support ring. At one temperature, the flow modulating elementsovercome the resilient force of the resilient elementsto lie against the wall of a ductin which the device is situated. The flow modulating elementsthus offer a relatively low resistance to flow in the duct. At a second temperature, the force of the resilient elementsovercomes that of the flow modulating elementsto deflect them inwardly of the duct, so increasing the flow resistance of the device.
