A system () and method () related to gathering statistical information regarding a data stream. The method () may include sending (), by a data forwarding device (), an internet protocol (IP) multicast data stream to a multicast group using an internet protocol (IP); and collecting () statistical data from a router (-) down stream of the forwarding device () to determine a number of end point recipients () associated with the multicast group and receiving the multicast data stream.
