Hydrogen ('H') is produced when ammonia borane reacts with a catalyst complex of the formula LM-X wherein M is a base metal such as iron, X is an anionic nitrogen- or phosphorus-based ligand or hydride, and L is a neutral ancillary ligand that is a neutral monodentate or polydentate ligand.
