Abstract

A load bearing member () for supporting an elevator car () has a plurality of tension members () that bear the weight and counterweight of the elevator car (). The plurality of tension members extends along a length. An outer cover () envelopes the plurality of tension members and has a first surface and a second surface. The plurality of tension members are sandwiched between the first surface () and the second surf ace (). The first surface is for traction on a sheave (). The first surface and the second surface define a cross-section () transverse to the length of the load bearing member. The cross-section has a first end portion (), a middle portion () and a second end portion (). The middle portion has a first width (w) between the first surface and the second surface which is smaller than a second width (w) between the first surface and the second surface of one of the first end portion and the second end portion.
