Abstract

The present invention aims to provide a metal vapor discharge lamp that has an outer tube less likely to break, and that is obtained at low manufacturing cost. A metal vapor discharge lampcomprises: an outer tubehaving an open end portionat one end and a closed end portionat another end; an inner tubehoused in the outer tube; a discharge tubehoused in the inner tube; and a baseattached to the open end portionof the outer tube, wherein relationships of t≧1.1×d; 0<d; and 0.3≦t are satisfied, where t denotes a minimum thickness, in millimeters, of the closed end portionof the outer tube, d denotes a shortest distance, in millimeters, in a direction of a longitudinal axis of the outer tube, between an inner surfaceof the closed end portionof the outer tubeand an outer surfaceof an end portionof the inner tube, the end portionbeing located opposite from the base
